Gran Torino

Last night Sara and I used the last of the Cineworld birthday card to go and see Gran Torino, her first (and probably last!) Clint Eastwood film. The fact that Clint both directed, produced and starred in the film is pretty impressive, and you've got to love his character and classic Dirty Harryesque antics, but the guy seriously did himself a disservice when it comes to the casting. The other characters in the film leave a lot to be desired, and the acting is in parts downright atrocious, not to mention a pretty predictable script. Having said that, Clint is bad as, and he is a legend after all, so I guess he can do what he likes...and the car is a beauty, so whether you like the film or not, I guess you can always drool. Should you go and see it? Well, we don't know how many more films he's got in him, so why not? ...just don't take your wife!

Strip Church Las Vegas

This one's no doubt controversial, but I have to say I'm stoked to see what Graig Gross is doing in the States. Together with the guys at XXXChurch he's come one step closer to realising the dream to see people in the porn industry and adult trade show circuit ministered to in a relevant and real way. The new venture is an actual church (as opposed to XXXChurch, which is a virtual "church"/ministry) on the Strip in Las Vegas. Fittingly (and provocatively) titled Strip Church, Graig and his team of staff and interns aim to be salt and light in a city full girls and gambling.

These guys are sure to face criticism and resistance both from people in the church and people in the porn industry, and it's definitely a controversial call to act on, but I can't help but think if a certain Hebrew who hung out with adulterers and prostitutes, tax collectors and other unlikely folks, and that it's to them he sent us, not to the "healthy and wholesome" of the world. Good luck and God bless to them I say.

Go Strip Church!

Reject Apathy

Having already brought us one of the best magazines on the market and the more recent leadership resource Neue, the Florida-based RELEVANT Media Group have just added another branch to their ministry. Under the banner Reject Apathy, Cameron & co. are moving beyond just reporting what other people are doing and becoming intentional about creating avenues of their own for action and engagement.

A New Generation Rising in Finland

Richard and I just got back from a 5 day round trip to Finland, with stops in Tampere, Jyväskelä, Turku and Helsinki, and although it's good to be on British soil again, we're missing the freaky Finns and their quirky culture. These northerners are indeed a breed of their own...boasting some of the hottest saunas and the longest words on earth are just a few of their merits. They're also hosts to the World Air Guitar Championships and rival events such as gumboot-throwing competitions and the world cup in wife-carrying!

Maybe it's their passion for something different that makes them great candidates for living a life of devotion?...maybe it's a coincidence? Either way, we got to spend a few days with 3 of the most committed young ladies I know, giving everything and a little bit more to serving the Scandinavian schools and making the message of Jesus known across their often dark nation. Visiting the New Generation base in Jyväskelä, led by the heroic trio Mari, Maria and Jenny was definitely the highlight, but being part of a youth event in Turku on Saturday and Sunday wasn't bad either! With 3 meetings on Saturday and one Sunday morning, I came home tired, but being part of spurring the girls on and helping them come that bit closer to the 50-school mark was a privilege and an honour. Leaving the country the group count was 48, and loads of new members, leaders and schoolsworkers had heard about our network and the new generation rising in this northern nation.

The Thomas Tribute

I went for my first proper skate in as long as I can remember today, and it amazed me how quickly it all started coming back. A few minutes on a board and I realise that's where I'm meant to be...none of this golf business or buffing up at the gym, just give me a nice piece of maple, a set of indies and some 52mms and I'm as content as I could be.

The day's cruise had me reminiscing about the old days and I thought I'd check out a couple of the video parts that inspired me all those years ago. Thanks to YouTube I didn't have to raid my old video collection and try to track down a VCR! So, here's one of all-time favourite riders, 34-year old skatebaord legend, entrepreneur and, more recently, family man Jamie Thomas, in 3 of his best parts ever...watch out for the barefoot frontside lippy down a thirteen stair rail in Welcome to Hell...filmed just a couple of months before I first met Jamie at a Beastie Boys gig in Sydney New Years Eve 95.
